Prior to 1991 public council meetings in Cote Saint-Luc began at 9PM. That meant that meetings would often continue past 11PM and occasionally midnight, before citizens could rise for the second question period. I thought that was pretty late for the average citizen.

I sparred with Mayor Lang at the time. He wasn’t fond of changing the status quo, particularly not for me as the youngest city councillor. Lang would often say, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”

Well, I thought a lot needed fixing back then and as a rookie councillor, only a couple of months in office, I was successful in getting the start time of the public council meetings moved up by one hour.
