City Council congratulates longtime volunteer Jack Budovitch with the CSL Lifetime Achievement Award

Cote Saint-Luc is renowned as a city of numerous volunteers and great civic pride. In this spirit the city threw a huge bash last night to thank many of its top volunteers for going above and beyond in creating a community of caring, giving neighbours.

The CSL gym was transformed into an elegant ballroom as hundreds of residents filed in to music, food, entertainment by local rising star Brandon Schwartz and an award ceremony highlighting volunteer’s night.

Mayor Anthony Housefather welcomed the capacity crowd to the 2014 Volunteer Recognition evening, heaping praise upon each of them in saying how much better off our community is by their involvement.

Event co-chairs Councillor Mitchell Brownstein and Councillor Ruth Kovac warmly acknowledged the contribution and sacrifices our volunteers make in giving of their time and efforts. Kovac captured the essence of volunteerism by summarizing the five Ws of who does this work, why they do it, where, when and why our volunteers do what they do. Brownstein recounted his earliest memories of volunteerism in the time his mother lent to his grade school and understanding that this was something he would do as well. He generously credited me with his involvement in municipal politics owing to his invaluable help, along with Kovac, in my bid for a council seat in 1989, one year before the three of us took office together.

The highlight was the announcement of this year’s volunteer lineup.

I have been attending Volunteers Night since 1980 and it has always been a highlight on my social agenda. My first decade at these events was due to my major participation as an EMS volunteer. It is wonderful to personally greet and thank our spectacular volunteers for their incredible contributions in supporting, safeguarding, strengthening and building our community together.

I have a special penchant for our EMS and vCOP volunteers having played leading roles in these areas over the years. I appreciate the work of everyone who gives their time to our city. Today I offer a extra tip of the hat to our volunteer medics and patrollers. They are on duty at all hours of day and night and come to our assistance when we need it most. Your time, training, readiness and devotion is so very much appreciated.
