English Montreal School Board (EMSB) Commissioner Dr. Syd Wise is inviting parents interested in discussing the establishment of a mainstream high school at the former Wagar building in Côte Saint-Luc to attend an information meeting on Tuesday, February 17 (7 p.m.) at the Aquatic and Community Centre (5794 Parkhaven Avenue).

Dr. Wise says he is encouraged with this latest attempt to bring a high school back to the community because it is parent driven. “In this case the parents are taking the lead,” he said. “The ball is in their court to see what kind of interest there is. I still believe that a mainstream high school can thrive again in the former Wagar building, where I once served as principal.”

Ilana Grostern, who is spearheading the ad hoc committee to open a new high school at the Grade 7 level for the 2016-2017 academic year, has already launched a Facebook page. She is encouraging all interested parents, especially with those with children presently in Grade 5, to attend and contribute to the conversation.

“We most strongly encourage parents of children currently in Grade 5 in EMSB schools to attend in order to assess the interest for an initial cohort, and to discuss structure possibilities for the proposed new high school,” said Ms. Grostern. “All other parents are welcome, as the possibility of initiating other grades will depend on numbers per grade. Parent input will be requested, and volunteers will be encouraged to step forward to establish a committee.”
