Friday the Thirteenth was an extraordinarily lucky day in the lives of 45 fortunate Mount Royal riding residents as they boarded a motorcoach early yesterday morning in Cote Saint-Luc. It was also a very lucky day for the young man, clad in a smart suit, bright white shirt and red tie sitting in the first row. He had dreamed of this day for nearly 40 years, since he was just six years old.

Decades of preparation had elevated this individual to status of international lawyer, local mayor, regional and provincial influential leader in public policy and legislation. This was no longer a dream. For this was the day that Anthony Housefather assumed the Office of Member of Parliament for Mount Royal, becoming the eighth representative of the riding since 1925.

Arriving on Parliament Hill the Housefather group was treated to a personalized tour of Centre Block by a talented and skillful guide, Ariel Shapiro. From the House of Commons, to the Library of Parliament and the Senate “Red Room”, Shapiro recounted stories of Canadian history that took place right where we stood in Centre Block. The tour ended with a visit up the Peace Tower.

Campaign Manager Sidney Margles invited his old friend Jim Munson, former CTV News reporter and current senator, to greet the group and usher them into the Red Room.

Munson explained that he now sits as a “Senate Liberal” since Justin Trudeau released the former “Liberal Senators” from the Liberal Party to sit as independents. He recounted several fascinating stories from the Senate Chamber and predicted that Housefather would lead a long and successful career in Parliament and help to forge Canadian society and history.

After the tour it was time for the official Swearing In Ceremony in the prestigious Railway Committee Room off the Centre Block Hall of Honour. Pomp and ceremony were the name of the game as the House of Commons clerk entered the storied chamber robed in traditional court dress.

The officer of the House of Commons laid out the book of signatures that form the historical record of Canada’s Members of Parliament, a wooden pen and the exclusive lapel pin worn by the 338 MPs.

The room erupted in great cheer and applause. My wife, Judy, “lulu’ed” in traditional ululation of celebration as she and others showered maple leaf sweets from the Parliament gift shop upon the new MP. This was surely the only swearing-in to witness such joy usually reserved for Sephardi celebrations, in tribute to Housefather’s blend of Ashkenazi and Sephardi lineage.

Housefather, in his eloquent and passionate style thanked his family, friends and supporters for their trust and confidence. A paparazzi throng of camera-clickers, befitting royalty, clicked their cameras, iPhones and other devices to capture this moment in history.
