Beautiful weather has arrived early in the magnificent Laurentians, my Up North playground. The timing is perfect to share my experience from last October when my wife Judy, our 14-year-old son Jeremy, and I embarked on a breathtaking journey through the Sentier des Cimes Laurentides to witness the fall foliage. This innovative attraction offers easy, inclusive, and safe access to nature year-round, allowing visitors to appreciate its beauty from a unique and spectacular perspective.

A Revival of Natural Heritage

The Sentier des Cimes Laurentides is more than just a hiking trail; it is a revitalization project that has breathed new life into the Ancienne-Pisciculture heritage site, managed by the MRC des Laurentides since 1933. As Nicolas Joly, General Manager, explained, “Preserving exceptional sites and restoring and revitalizing existing infrastructures rather than developing new ones is an approach rooted in the principles of sustainable development that helps to reduce the ecological footprint of new projects.”

An Elevated Experience

The Sentier des Cimes features a wooden walkway that winds through the treetops, offering spectacular views of the Laurentian landscape. The total length of the trail is 1,350 meters, with the walkway reaching heights of up to 18 meters. The maximum slope is a gentle 6%, making it accessible to visitors of all ages and abilities.

The highlight of our visit was the panoramic tower, rising 40 meters above the ground—equivalent to a dozen floors. The view from the top was absolutely breathtaking. We could see the rolling landscape of the Laurentian mountain range, with landmarks like Mont-Tremblant visible in the distance. We felt the breeze and saw birds circling above and below. Each season offers a different palette of colours and endless horizons, making every visit unique.

Thrilling Adventure

For the more adventurous, the giant net suspended 40 meters high in the centre of the tower is a thrill-seekers must-do. “I was a bit scared at first, but the view and the excitement of walking on the net made it worth it,” said Jeremy, who enjoys a good adrenaline rush.

The design of the walkway and tower is so well thought out. It’s massive and solid and feels like you’re walking up the steps of a building without walls or windows. I don’t have a fear of heights but I was stepping just beyond my comfort zone. I even took a few steps onto the net atop the tower! Just a few!

A Family-Friendly Destination

Judy doesn’t need thrills to enjoy an outing with family surrounded by beautiful nature as far as the eye could see, in every direction. Her thrill was to watch the face of our son enjoying every loop that brought us closer to the top.

The Sentier des Cimes is a perfect family destination, and we were particularly impressed by how inclusive and accommodating it is. The walkway is 8 feet (2.5 meters) wide, providing ample space for everyone. We saw many people pushing strollers and wheelchairs. Visitors who bring their own food and drink are asked to carry out their trash, ensuring that the trail remains pristine for everyone to enjoy. There are also rubbish bins placed conveniently around the trail.

Planning Your Visit

The Sentier des Cimes is open year-round, offering a unique experience in each season. Whether you’re witnessing the awakening of spring with its budding trees and birdsong or the splendor of apple blossoms in summer, there’s always something magical to see.

If you’re planning a visit, be sure to wear comfortable clothing and footwear appropriate for the season. While it is possible to navigate the trail in sandals or high heels, comfortable shoes are recommended for the best experience.

We arrived by bike, taking advantage of ample free parking in Saint-Faustin-Lac-Carré at the old train station on the P’Tit Train du Nord linear park. (Be sure to read my review on this phenomenal bike path.) Heading north on this world-class linear path it was an easy 20 minutes to reach the Sentier des Cimes Laurentides. Likewise, you can easily cycle south on the bike path from the Mont-Tremblant area.

You can purchase tickets directly at the Sentier des Cimes Laurentides ticket office or in advance through their electronic ticketing service to avoid long queues. The site is located near Route 117 (Trans-Canada Highway) between Mont-Tremblant and Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts. (On Waze or Google maps: 737, rue de la Pisciculture, Mont-Blanc).

There is a snack bar and restaurant on site as well as a souvenir shop with nick-nacks to remember your visit. They also carry local artisanal goods.

Looking Forward to Summer

Our family can’t wait to return to Sentier des Cimes Laurentides for a summer viewing. We’ll be back with friends this time. The thought of experiencing the trail amidst the lush greenery and vibrant blossoms is incredibly enticing. Judy summed it up perfectly: “This place is a gem in every season, and we’re excited to see it in full summer bloom.”

In summary, our visit to the Sentier des Cimes Laurentides was an unforgettable experience. The combination of natural beauty, innovative design, and family-friendly amenities makes it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

A spectacular view awaits as you wind your way to the top of the Laurentians!
